FIND CAUSE to support for AARAMBH

“We shall draw from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival.”

Who We Are?

Aarambh Palliative cancer care center is a charitable trust that was launched on June 5, 2017 in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The Foundation creates awareness on the prevention, management and reference for treatment of cancer in Ahmednagar.

The Aarambh stands for people affected by Cancer. Our objective is to support cancer patients, by providing home based care to those patients who find it difficult to come to the hospital for treatment. Most of the times Home based care is also supported with counseling for the patients and their families.

Home based care is the lifeline of many patients because not all the patients are able to make it to the hospital because of advancement of disease, long distance and also lack of resources to support the treatment

We reach out to Cancer patients across Ahmednagar, irrespective of colour, caste, creed, religion or class. For those families whose breadwinners are affected by Cancer, we try to minimise the disruptions to support them with government scheme or raise fund for them to meet their daily life. We work to see each Cancer patient and their family overcome the trauma of Cancer and stand up for life.

Aarambh has become a trusted institution for cancer awareness, reference services and home based care services in Ahmednagar pool of over 4 trained volunteers to provide the services in various part of ahmednagar city has so far has provided cancer awarness and reference services for 257 men and women. The services provided are for the most common cancers in Ahmednagar, namely breast, cervical, mouth, lungs, kidney, bladder, stomach, ovary, prostate cancers. Aarambh seeks to expand its services across Ahmednagar District and to establish best practice standards and promote exchange of experience with existing centres of excellence around the world.

Aarambh also advocates for governments to pay due attention to cancer awareness and to increase the preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for cancer in Ahmednagar.

    Aarambh Palliative Cancer Care

Friends, This is start of Dreams, Human beings are developing day by day, daily we have news of lots of inventions. Our life has new speed. We found new horizons. After having lots of things, there is lots of changes in our daily routine, our daily activities. Which causes sudden changes on human health & most of them are side effects. CANCER is one of them.

    What is Palliative?
Agriculture fields uses lots of chemicals, pesticides to increase growth of plants or increase in output from soil in terms of crops & in terms of money. Due to highly use of such material, they are transfering to human body from food. And those are cancer agents, main cause to increase cancer. Our chaging food habits, Raw material & chemicals used in preparation of food also causes cancer. There is no exact or proper medicine to cure cancer till date. Palliative means to make culture or environment to patients those are reached at last stage of cancer & this environment should be painless.

    How Aarambh works for center?
We have started huge movement towards Counselling and Janjagruti. We are organizing many events at Schools, Colleges, Villages where we are giving introduction about cancer to participants & doing awareness about innatural habbits which causes cancer. We also doing programs by which we can provide information to Youth about cancer awareness, causes of cancer, avoid smoking and tobacco habits & what are their side effects of human health and how they convert into cancer. We are also organizing camps, where people can participate for free check ups related Cancer. We are providing help desk to cancer patients where they can get free treatment if they are econimically weak. We are also forming support groups, where patients can give one day to us & we make that day beautiful than their expectation.

    How can you help?
There are many people, those are fighting with Cancer. Cancer is not limited to patient, Cancer developes many issues in Family in terms of money and in terms of mental strain & stress. All treatments are very much costly. So normal people can not pay such huge amounts. These treatments are very much painful to patients as well as family members too. So, with help of our palliative cancer care center, this will definitly reduced. So you can reffer such patients to us, and we can give them as much as we can.

    A. Counseling

The guiding lifeline for our organization is to support people affected by Cancer. For a person affected with Cancer, the entire world turns upside down. Most of the time the patient gets a shock and is unable to come in terms of the disease. Instead of going for treating the disease, they move in denial mode by refusing to meet the doctors, relatives or even accepting medical support.

Our interventions with such cases are personalized depending upon the need of the patient and their family. The first step is to start with the mental strengthening exercise and believing that Cancer doesn’t mean hopelessness or death. Cancer is a nasty disease, and just like any other disease it needs to be treated. The key is your mental strength, right diagnosis and correct treatment. While treating Cancer patients, time is of outmost importance. In many a cases it has been observed that delay in starting the treatment leads to spread of disease and it taking a more aggressive form. There are thousand of cases where people who were once affected by Cancer have fully recovered and are leading an absolutely normal life.

  • To offer emotional support and medical aid to cancer patients
  • To establish and encourage cancer survivorship programmes
  • To give a purposeful expression of feelings
  • Manage depression and anxiety
  • First to know the background and situation of the family
  • To motivate cancer patients by which they can encourage to survive
  • To encourage family members to take Care of the patient
  • Discuss about the financial concerns and identify the helpful recourses
  • B. Home based Services

Home based care is for those patients who are very sick or are unable to visit the hospital due to huge distances or their own physical condition or lack of resources. We do this as we feel it is necessary to visit and care for bedridden cancer patients who would otherwise not get any medical attention due to their physical conditions.

Home Care is also the most practical option for such patients – saving them precious time, energy and resources. At home, concerns of the family can be addressed in a relaxed atmosphere. There is a huge need and demand for home based care.

When their condition is progressively deteriorating, and they have a very low chance of being cured, people with cancer in advanced stages often choose to receive palliative care in the comfort and privacy of their homes, surrounded by loved ones. Our team of home based care, are technically as well as mentally strong who lend great support and give proper treatment, Unfortunately due to lack of resources we are unable to help all such requests.

    C. Referral Services

  • We are providing Information about hospital to patient
  • We are also providing Information about the scheme of the government to the patient
  • D. Creating Awareness

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. It accounts for 7.4 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2004. Cancer often creates fear which comes out of ignorance and misconception. More than 30% of cancer cases could be prevented by modifying lifestyle or avoiding key risk factors. About 1/3rd of cancer cases could be reduced if cases are treated and detected at an early stage, To create awareness of the disease.

To help common people recognize the early signs and symptoms of cancer and thereby enabling them to seek treatment at the earliest an early stage. The program encourages the participants to seek prompt medical attention for symptoms which may include lumps, sores, bleeding, hoarseness, weight loss and persistent indigestion/cough/pain, etc.

To generate awareness about the key risk factors associated with cancer. More 30% of cancer cases could be prevented by modifying lifestyle or avoiding the key risk factors, which means that these disease could be avoided

To encourage cancer check-ups at an early stage and to motivate them to avail of cancer check-up services at a very nominal cost through the Cancer Detection Centre and Mobile Cancer Detection Centres of various institutions.

    Counselling

Counselling can help you sort out many different types of problems that you may face when you have cancer.

    Counselling can help with:

    • coping with your reactions to cancer
    • family and relationship issues
    • exploring personal issues
    • dealing with practical issues

    Reactions and stress

    • fear or anger
    • strong reactions to changes to your body
    • anxiety about treatment
    • You may feel very angry, or find it difficult to cope with a feeling of loss of control.

    Cancer can stir up

    • You might also feel very stressed about having to cope with side effects of treatment, such as fatigue, pain or sickness.
    • spirituality
    • sexuality
    • relationships

    Your family relationships

    • Cancer can also affect your family relationships. You might find it affects how to talk to your children or your intimacy with your partner
    • It might also lead to role changes within the family, if you are no longer able to fulfil the role you used to, even temporarily.
All these can cause family tensions or extra stress for you.

    Financial strain

You might need to have difficult conversations about:

    • financial support
    • mortgages
    • pensions
    • making a will
There may be practical issue such as transport problems or difficulty talking to your doctors.

    How talking helps

    • You may want to deal with things in ways that your friends or family don't agree with.
    • So it might help to talk through any of these issues and feelings with someone outside your friends and family.Your friends and family may be too close to the issues to see them clearly and objectively.
    • A counsellor can help you to find different ways of coping that hadn't occurred to you before.

    Your doctors and nurses

    • Although some doctors and nurses may provide their patients with emotional and psychological support, many don’t feel comfortable doing this.
    • Some health care staff may not feel able to give support or they may not have the time.
    • Their main focus is on treating and curing your cancer. Of course, if you have cancer, this is very important. But many people are also worried about how they can cope with their illness and how it will disrupt their everyday life.
    • Because of this, some cancer units now have a counsellor or psychotherapist as part of their team.

    Helps with treatment

    • We know from research that counselling can help some people overcome the depression and anxiety that cancer can cause.
    • There’s also evidence that certain methods of counselling can help people deal with phobias about having cancer treatments. The phobias include:
    • fear of having injections
    • being confined to a small space during an MRI scan
And because counselling is confidential, you can be honest about what is bothering you.

Charity & love are the same

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at a time of challenge and controversy.”
    – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Cancer Causes and Prevention

Cancer prevention is action taken to lower the risk of getting cancer. This can include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding exposure to known cancer-causing substances, and taking medicines or vaccines that can prevent cancer from developing.

    What is Prevention?

Cancer prevention is action taken to lower the chance of getting cancer. In 2017, more than 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States. In addition to the physical problems and emotional distress caused by cancer, the high costs of care are also a burden to patients, their families, and to the public. By preventing cancer, the number of new cases of cancer is lowered. Hopefully, this will reduce the burden of cancer and lower the number of deaths caused by cancer.

Cancer is not a single disease but a group of related diseases. Many things in our genes, our lifestyle, and the environment around us may increase or decrease our risk of getting cancer.

    Ways to help prevention

Scientists are studying many different ways to help prevent cancer, including the following:

    • Ways to avoid or control things known to cause cancer.
    • Changes in diet and lifestyle.
    • Finding precancerous conditions early. Precancerous conditions are conditions that may become cancer.
    • Chemoprevention (medicines to treat a precancerous condition or to keep cancer from starting).
    • Risk-reducing surgery.

    Risk Factors for Cancer

It is usually not possible to know exactly why one person develops cancer and another doesn’t. But research has shown that certain risk factors may increase a person’s chances of developing cancer. (There are also factors that are linked to a lower risk of cancer. These are sometimes called protective risk factors, or just protective factors.)

Cancer risk factors include exposure to chemicals or other substances, as well as certain behaviors. They also include things people cannot control, like age and family history. A family history of certain cancers can be a sign of a possible inherited cancer syndrome.

Most cancer risk (and protective) factors are initially identified in epidemiology studies. In these studies, scientists look at large groups of people and compare those who develop cancer with those who don’t. These studies may show that the people who develop cancer are more or less likely to behave in certain ways or to be exposed to certain substances than those who do not develop cancer.

Such studies, on their own, cannot prove that a behavior or substance causes cancer. For example, the finding could be a result of chance, or the true risk factor could be something other than the suspected risk factor. But findings of this type sometimes get attention in the media, and this can lead to wrong ideas about how cancer starts and spreads.

When many studies all point to a similar association between a potential risk factor and an increased risk of cancer, and when a possible mechanism exists that could explain how the risk factor could actually cause cancer, scientists can be more confident about the relationship between the two.

The list below includes the most-studied known or suspected risk factors for cancer. Although some of these risk factors can be avoided, others—such as growing older—cannot. Limiting your exposure to avoidable risk factors may lower your risk of developing certain cancers.

    A. Age and Cancer Risk

Advancing age is the most important risk factor for cancer overall, and for many individual cancer types. According to the most recent statistical data from NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, the median age of a cancer diagnosis is 66 years. This means that half of cancer cases occur in people below this age and half in people above this age. One-quarter of new cancer cases are diagnosed in people aged 65 to 74.

A similar pattern is seen for many common cancer types. For example, the median age at diagnosis is 61 years for breast cancer, 68 years for colorectal cancer, 70 years for lung cancer, and 66 years for prostate cancer.

But the disease can occur at any age. For example, bone cancer is most frequently diagnosed among people under age 20, with more than one-fourth of cases occurring in this age group. And 10 percent of leukemias are diagnosed in children and adolescents under 20 years of age, whereas only 1 percent of cancer overall is diagnosed in that age group. Some types of cancer, such as neuroblastoma, are more common in children or adolescents than in adults.

    B. Alcohol

Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx (voice box), liver, and breast. The more you drink, the higher your risk. The risk of cancer is much higher for those who drink alcohol and also use tobacco.

Doctors advise people who drink to do so in moderate amounts. The federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines moderate alcohol drinking as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.

It has been suggested that certain substances in red wine, such as resveratrol, have anticancer properties. However, there is no evidence that drinking red wine reduces the risk of cancer.

Heavy Alcohol causes following types of Cancers:
Head and neck cancer: Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption is associated with higher risks of certain head and neck cancers. Moderate drinkers have 1.8-fold higher risks of oral cavity (excluding the lips) and pharynx (throat) cancers and 1.4-fold higher risks of larynx (voice box) cancers than non-drinkers, and heavy drinkers have 5-fold higher risks of oral cavity and pharynx cancers and 2.6-fold higher risks of larynx cancers.
Esophageal cancer: Alcohol consumption at any level is associated with an increased risk of a type of esophageal cancer called esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The risks, compared with no alcohol consumption, range from 1.3-fold higher for light drinking to nearly 5-fold higher for heavy drinking. In addition, people who inherit a deficiency in an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol have been found to have substantially increased risks of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma if they consume alcohol.
Liver cancer: Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with approximately 2-fold increased risks of two types of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma).
Breast cancer: Epidemiologic studies have consistently found an increased risk of breast cancer with increasing alcohol intake. Pooled data from 118 individual studies indicates that light drinkers have a slightly increased (1.04-fold higher) risk of breast cancer, compared with nondrinkers. The risk increase is greater in moderate drinkers (1.23-fold higher) and heavy drinkers (1.6-fold higher).
Colorectal cancer: Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption is associated with 1.2- to 1.5-fold increased risks of cancers of the colon and rectum compared with no alcohol consumption.

    C. Cancer-Causing Substances in the Environment

Cancer is caused by changes to certain genes that alter the way our cells function. Some of these genetic changes occur naturally when DNA is replicated during the process of cell division. But others are the result of environmental exposures that damage DNA. These exposures may include substances, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke, or radiation, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun.

People can avoid some cancer-causing exposures, such as tobacco smoke and the sun’s rays. But others are harder to avoid, especially if they are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, or the materials we use to do our jobs. Scientists are studying which exposures may cause or contribute to the development of cancer. Understanding which exposures are harmful, and where they are found, may help people to avoid them.

The substances listed below are among the most likely carcinogens to affect human health. Simply because a substance has been designated as a carcinogen, however, does not mean that the substance will necessarily cause cancer. Many factors influence whether a person exposed to a carcinogen will develop cancer, including the amount and duration of the exposure and the individual’s genetic background. Learn more about Environmental Carcinogens and Cancer Risk.

    List of Cancer causing agents:

Aflatoxins, Aristolochic Acids, Arsenic, Asbestos, Benzene, Benzidine, Beryllium, 1,3-Butadiene, Cadmium, Coal Tar and Coal-Tar Pitch, Coke-Oven Emissions, Crystalline Silica (respirable size), Erionite, Ethylene Oxide, Formaldehyde, Hexavalent Chromium Compounds, Indoor Emissions from the Household Combustion of Coal, Mineral Oils: Untreated and Mildly Treated, Nickel Compounds, Radon, Secondhand Tobacco Smoke (Environmental Tobacco Smoke), Soot, Strong Inorganic Acid Mists Containing Sulfuric Acid, Thorium, Vinyl Chloride, Wood Dust.

    D. Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation is a normal physiological response that causes injured tissue to heal. An inflammatory process starts when chemicals are released by the damaged tissue. In response, white blood cells make substances that cause cells to divide and grow to rebuild tissue to help repair the injury. Once the wound is healed, the inflammatory process ends.

In chronic inflammation, the inflammatory process may begin even if there is no injury, and it does not end when it should. Why the inflammation continues is not always known. Chronic inflammation may be caused by infections that don’t go away, abnormal immune reactions to normal tissues, or conditions such as obesity. Over time, chronic inflammation can cause DNA damage and lead to cancer. For example, people with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease, have an increased risk of colon cancer.

Many studies have investigated whether anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, reduce the risk of cancer. However, a clear answer is not yet available.

    E. Obesity

People who are obese may have an increased risk of several types of cancer, including cancers of the breast (in women who have been through menopause), colon, rectum, endometrium (lining of the uterus), esophagus, kidney, pancreas, and gallbladder.

Conversely, eating a healthy diet, being physically active, and keeping a healthy weight may help reduce risk of some cancers. These healthy behaviors are also important to lessen the risk of other illnesses, such as heart disease, type II diabetes, and high blood pressure.

    F. Diet

Many studies have looked at the possibility that specific dietary components or nutrients are associated with increases or decreases in cancer risk. Studies of cancer cells in the laboratory and of animal models have sometimes provided evidence that isolated compounds may be carcinogenic (or have anticancer activity).

But with few exceptions, studies of human populations have not yet shown definitively that any dietary component causes or protects against cancer. Sometimes the results of epidemiologic studies that compare the diets of people with and without cancer have indicated that people with and without cancer differ in their intake of a particular dietary component.

However, these results show only that the dietary component is associated with a change in cancer risk, not that the dietary component is responsible for, or causes, the change in risk. For example, study participants with and without cancer could differ in other ways besides their diet, and it is possible that some other difference accounts for the difference in cancer.

When evidence emerges from an epidemiologic study that a dietary component is associated with a reduced risk of cancer, a randomized trial may be done to test this possibility. Random assignment to dietary groups ensures that any differences between people who have high and low intakes of a nutrient are due to the nutrient itself rather than to other undetected differences. (For ethical reasons, randomized studies are not generally done when evidence emerges that a dietary component may be associated with an increased risk of cancer.)

Scientists have studied many additives, nutrients, and other dietary components for possible associations with cancer risk. These include:

    • Acrylamide
    • Acrylamide is a chemical found in tobacco smoke and some foods. It can be produced when certain vegetables, such as potatoes, are heated to high temperatures. Studies in animal models have found that acrylamide exposure increases the risk for several types of cancer. However, there is no consistent evidence that dietary acrylamide exposure is associated with the risk of any type of cancer in humans.
    • Alcohol
    • Although red wine has been suspected of reducing cancer risk, there is no scientific evidence for such an association. Also, alcohol is a known cause of cancer. Heavy or regular alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity (excluding the lips), pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), esophagus, liver, breast, colon, and rectum. The risk of developing cancer increases with the amount of alcohol a person drinks.
    • Antioxidants
    • Antioxidants are chemicals that block the activity of other chemicals, known as free radicals, that may damage cells. Laboratory and animal research has shown that exogenous antioxidants can help prevent the free radical damage associated with the development of cancer, but research in humans has not demonstrated convincingly that taking antioxidant supplements can help reduce the risk of developing or dying from cancer. Some studies have even shown an increased risk of some cancers.
    • Artificial sweeteners
    • Studies have been conducted on the safety of several artificial sweeteners, including saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, neotame, and cyclamate. There is no clear evidence that the artificial sweeteners available commercially in the United States are associated with cancer risk in humans.
    • Calcium
    • Calcium is an essential dietary mineral that can be obtained from food and supplements. Research results overall support a relationship between higher intakes of calcium and reduced risks of colorectal cancer, but the results of studies have not always been consistent. Whether a relationship exists between higher calcium intakes and reduced risks of other cancers, such as breast and ovarian cancer, is unclear. Some research suggests that a high calcium intake may increase the risk of prostate cancer.
    • Charred meat
    • Certain chemicals, called HCAs and PAHs, are formed when muscle meat, including beef, pork, fish, and poultry, is cooked using high-temperature methods. Exposure to high levels of HCAs and PAHs can cause cancer in animals; however, whether such exposure causes cancer in humans is unclear. sheet.
    • Cruciferous vegetables
    • Cruciferous vegetables contain chemicals known as glucosinolates, which break down into several compounds that are being studied for possible anticancer effects. Some of these compounds have shown anticancer effects in cells and animals, but the results of studies with humans have been less clear.
    • Fluoride
    • Fluoride in water helps to prevent and can even reverse tooth decay. Many studies, in both humans and animals, have shown no association between fluoridated water and cancer risk.
    • Garlic
    • Some studies have suggested that garlic consumption may reduce the risk of developing several types of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. However, the evidence is not definitive.
    • Tea
    • Tea contains polyphenol compounds, particularly catechins, which are antioxidants. Results of epidemiologic studies examining the association between tea consumption and cancer risk have been inconclusive. Few clinical trials of tea consumption and cancer prevention have been conducted and their results have also been inconclusive.
    • Vitamin D
    • Vitamin D helps the body use calcium and phosphorus to make strong bones and teeth. It is obtained primarily through exposure of the skin to sunlight, but it can also be obtained from some foods and dietary supplements. Epidemiologic studies in humans have suggested that higher intakes of vitamin D or higher levels of vitamin D in the blood may be associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, but the results of randomized studies have been inconclusive.

    G. Immunosuppression

Many people who receive organ transplants take medications to suppress the immune system so the body won’t reject the organ. These "immunosuppressive" drugs make the immune system less able to detect and destroy cancer cells or fight off infections that cause cancer. Infection with HIV also weakens the immune system and increases the risk of certain cancers.

Research has shown that transplant recipients are at increased risk of a large number of different cancers. Some of these cancers can be caused by infectious agents, whereas others are not. The four most common cancers among transplant recipients and that occur more commonly in these individuals than in the general population are non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and cancers of the lung, kidney, and liver. NHL can be caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, and liver cancer by chronic infection with the hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) viruses. Lung and kidney cancers are not generally thought to be associated with infection.

People with HIV/AIDS also have increased risks of cancers that are caused by infectious agents, including EBV; human herpesvirus 8, or Kaposi sarcoma-associated virus; HBV and HCV, which cause liver cancer; and human papillomavirus, which causes cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, and other cancers. HIV infection is also associated with increased risks of cancers that are not thought to be caused by infectious agents, such as lung cancer.

    H. Hormones

Estrogens, a group of female sex hormones, are known human carcinogens. Although these hormones have essential physiological roles in both females and males, they have also been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. For instance, taking combined menopausal hormone therapy (estrogen plus progestin, which is a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone) can increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Menopausal hormone therapy with estrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial cancer and is used only in women who have had a hysterectomy.

Studies have also shown that a woman’s risk of breast cancer is related to the estrogen and progesterone made by her ovaries (known as endogenous estrogen and progesterone). Being exposed for a long time and/or to high levels of these hormones has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Increases in exposure can be caused by starting menstruation early, going through menopause late, being older at first pregnancy, and never having given birth. Conversely, having given birth is a protective factor for breast cancer.

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a form of estrogen that was given to some pregnant women in the United States between 1940 and 1971 to prevent miscarriages, premature labor, and related problems with pregnancy. Women who took DES during pregnancy have an increased risk of breast cancer. Their daughters have an increased risk of a cancer of the vagina or cervix.

    I. Sunlight

The sun, sunlamps, and tanning booths all give off ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Exposure to UV radiation causes early aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer.

People of all ages and skin tones should limit the amount of time they spend in the sun, especially between mid-morning and late afternoon, and avoid other sources of UV radiation, such as tanning beds. It is important to keep in mind that UV radiation is reflected by sand, water, snow, and ice and can go through windshields and windows. Even though skin cancer is more common among people with a light skin tone, people of all skin tones can develop skin cancer, including those with dark skin.

Follow these tips to protect your skin from sunlight:

    • Wear a hat with a wide brim all around that shades your face, neck, and ears. Baseball caps and some sun visors protect only parts of your skin.
    • Wear sunglasses that block UV radiation to protect the skin around your eyes.
    • Wear long sleeves and long pants. Tightly woven, dark fabrics are best. Some fabrics are rated with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). The higher the rating, the greater the protection from sunlight.
    • Use sunscreen products with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. (Some doctors suggest using a product with an SPF of at least 30.) Apply the product’s recommended amount to uncovered skin 30 minutes before going outside, and apply again every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Keep in mind that the sun's rays...

    • are strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
    • can go through light clothing, windshields, windows, and clouds
    • are reflected by sand, water, snow, ice, and pavement

    J. Tobacco

Tobacco use is a leading cause of cancer and of death from cancer. People who use tobacco products or who are regularly around environmental tobacco smoke (also called secondhand smoke) have an increased risk of cancer because tobacco products and secondhand smoke have many chemicals that damage DNA.

Tobacco use causes many types of cancer, including cancer of the lung, larynx (voice box), mouth, esophagus, throat, bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia. People who use smokeless tobacco (snuff or chewing tobacco) have increased risks of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and pancreas.

There is no safe level of tobacco use. People who use any type of tobacco product are strongly urged to quit. People who quit smoking, regardless of their age, have substantial gains in life expectancy compared with those who continue to smoke. Also, quitting smoking at the time of a cancer diagnosis reduces the risk of death.

What harmful chemicals does tobacco smoke contain?

Tobacco smoke contains many chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Breathing even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful.

Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia.

Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include the following:
Acetaldehyde, Aromatic amines, Arsenic, Benzene, Beryllium (a toxic metal), 1,3–Butadiene (a hazardous gas), Cadmium (a toxic metal), Chromium (a metallic element), Cumene, Ethylene oxide, Formaldehyde, Nickel (a metallic element), Polonium-210 (a radioactive chemical element), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Tobacco-specific nitrosamines, Vinyl chloride

    K. Infectious Agents

Certain infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, can cause cancer or increase the risk that cancer will form. Some viruses can disrupt signaling that normally keeps cell growth and proliferation in check. Also, some infections weaken the immune system, making the body less able to fight off other cancer-causing infections. And some viruses, bacteria, and parasites also cause chronic inflammation, which may lead to cancer.

Most of the viruses that are linked to an increased risk of cancer can be passed from one person to another through blood and/or other body fluids. As described below, you can lower your risk of infection by getting vaccinated, not having unprotected sex, and not sharing needles.

    • Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)
    • Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis C Virus (HBV and HCV)
    • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
    • Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs)
    • Human T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1)
    • Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV)
    • Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV)
    • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
    • Opisthorchis viverrini
    • Schistosoma hematobium

    L. Radiation

Radiation of certain wavelengths, called ionizing radiation, has enough energy to damage DNA and cause cancer. Ionizing radiation includes radon, x-rays, gamma rays, and other forms of high-energy radiation. Lower-energy, non-ionizing forms of radiation, such as visible light and the energy from cell phones and electromagnetic fields, do not damage DNA and have not been found to cause cancer.

    Radon
Radon is a radioactive gas given off by rocks and soil. Radon is formed when the radioactive element radium breaks down. Radium in turn is formed when the radioactive elements uranium and thorium break down. People who are exposed to high levels of radon have an increased risk of lung cancer.
If you live in an area of the country that has high levels of radon in its rocks and soil, you may wish to test your home for this gas. Home radon tests are easy to use and do not cost much. Most hardware stores sell test kits. There are many ways to lessen the amount of radon in a home to a safe level.

X-Rays and Other Sources of Radiation
High-energy radiation, such as x-rays, gamma rays, alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons, can damage DNA and cause cancer. These forms of radiation can be released in accidents at nuclear power plants and when atomic weapons are made, tested, or used.

Certain medical procedures, such as chest x-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and radiation therapy can also cause cell damage that leads to cancer. However, the risks of cancer from these medical procedures are very small, and the benefit from having them is almost always greater than the risks.
